From automotive test rigs to virtual-reality classrooms
I started out writing infrastructure and DevOps tooling for an automotive C++ codebase, then moved into data science — building Bayesian inference pipelines and real-time reporting for an insurance company, and life-expectancy models for healthcare data.
Along the way I picked up an MSc in signal processing and machine learning, predicting ride-sharing demand for my dissertation, and a brief spell co-founding a virtual-learning-environment startup. That combination — infrastructure, data, and a genuine interest in how people learn — is what led me to a PhD in AI and my current research role at the University of Malta, where I get to build the systems I used to just study.

PhD in Artificial Intelligence

Researching the application of generative AI in educational content creation. The thesis aims to develop a platform for educators to model their education domain and create instructional and assessment content that covers it — content that can then be used in adaptive learning, personalising each student’s experience based on their mastery.
Supervised by Prof. Matthew Montebello and Dr. Dylan Seychell.

MSc in ICT (Signal Processing and Machine Learning)

Dissertation centred on using predicted demand in ride-sharing routing and scheduling — see Research for detail.
During the taught portion of the course, implemented a number of classical and state-of-the-art techniques to tackle realistic problems in domains including financial performance prediction, real-time audio signal processing, video tracking, image denoising and image understanding.

BSc (Hons) in Computer Engineering

Coursework included building a simple OS kernel, provisioning a cloud service, and programming various FPGA and microcontroller-based development boards to interact with sensors and other electronic components.
The final-year project used NLP techniques to classify business documents.
