Research Support Officer II

Working across two Learning Technology projects that use generative AI to create and distribute eLearning content for adult learners, with a focus on immersiveness and accessibility.
- ACCLAIMED — a traditional video-based eLearning environment.
- WAVE — a virtual-reality environment focused on water rescue training.
Responsibilities span primary and secondary research, architecting and developing custom software solutions, and liaising with Xjenza Malta. Also involved in project dissemination — publishing to the University of Malta and academic outlets (see Research).
Also delivers the study unit ICS 1019 — Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, covering lesson planning and delivery alongside assessment design and correction.

Secondary School Teacher

Taught ICT to students from Year 7 to Year 11, and Information Technology to students from Year 9 to Year 11. Responsibilities beyond lesson delivery included lesson planning, content creation, preparing examinations, and administrative work.

Technical Co-Founder

Worked on building a Virtual Learning Environment SaaS product serving a higher education institution in Malta. Responsible for infrastructure architecture and management, DevOps, and full-stack development.
The role also entailed meeting with higher-education representatives to discuss requirements from both a UX and technical perspective — including hosting, data privacy, and integrating learning technologies such as plagiarism checkers. The project was shut down as private-sector demand was not deemed sufficient to sustain further development.

Data Scientist
International General Insurance (IGI) · Floriana, Malta
Created the infrastructure to productionise a Bayesian inference model built with PyMC3, predicting future claim aggregates as a pilot project for data science at IGI. This included establishing MLOps architecture and practices later reused for pricing and finer-grained claims-prediction work.
Also architected and built a data pipeline ingesting data from a SaaS vendor in real time, enabling near-real-time reporting for the first time at the company. Infrastructure was hosted on Azure, with Docker used extensively to containerise each individually deployable unit.

Junior Data Scientist
Ascent Software (Mango Solutions) · Luqa, Malta
Worked with a client in the healthcare industry to model life expectancy and risk of various medical conditions from user-input lifestyle data and lab results. Day-to-day work involved extensive exploratory data analysis to understand patterns in the data and communicate results to non-technical stakeholders.
Other tasks included aggregating and aligning datasets, serving the models as an API via a Docker container hosted on Azure App Services, and generating feature importance. Also built a Dash dashboard to support batch predictions and visualisation of results, and wrote unit tests throughout.

2019 – 2021
Software Developer (DevOps)
Ascent Software · Luqa, Malta
Automated a product’s testing infrastructure using Jenkins, Python and Bash, and handled migration from a single-machine setup to AWS — allowing multiple team members to test their repository branches simultaneously and independently on every commit. Also migrated the codebase from SVN to Git.
The product itself was a large C++ codebase tested with the Boost testing library, for a client in the automotive industry.

Worked on the same automotive-industry product mentioned above, porting it to 64-bit Windows and Linux architectures, which had previously been unsupported.
